HMS Essex

Five ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Essex, after the British county of Essex.

  • The first HMS Essex (1653 ) was a ship of the line with 60 guns, which was launched in 1653 and was captured in the Four Days Battle in 1666 by the Dutch.
  • The second HMS Essex ( 1679 ) was a ship of the line third class with 70 cannons, which was built in 1679 and renewed in 1700 and 1759 was lost during the Battle of Quiberon Bay by beaching.
  • The third HMS Essex (1760 ) was a ship of the line third class with 64 cannons, which was launched in 1760 and was sold in 1799.
  • The fourth HMS Essex was the American frigate USS Essex (1799 ), which was acquired in 1837 in the Royal Navy after its conquest in 1814 sold for demolition.
  • The fifth HMS Essex (1901 ) was an armored cruiser, which was launched in 1901 and in 1921 sold for demolition.
