HMS London

Several ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS London to the city of London.

  • The first London was an East Indiaman of 40 guns, which was acquired in 1636 for the Royal Navy.
  • The second London was a ship of the line with 64 guns, which was launched in 1656 and 1665 was destroyed by an explosion.
  • The third London was a ship of the line with 96 guns, as the Loyal London was launched in 1666 and was set on fire in the same year by the Dutch in the Medway and destroyed.
  • The fourth London was also a ship of the line with 96 guns, which was launched in 1670 and scrapped in 1703.
  • The fifth London was a ship of the line with 100 guns, which was launched in 1706 but never put into service in 1719 and scrapped.
  • The sixth London was a ship of the line with 100 guns, which was launched in 1721, also never put into service in 1749 and scrapped.
  • The seventh London was a brigantine of 16 guns, which was built in 1756 for use on Lake Ontario, but still fell into the hands of the French in the same year.
  • The eighth London was a small ship with six guns, which was acquired in 1756 and 1758 was lost by shipwreck.
  • The ninth London was also a small boat with six guns, which was in service in 1759 and to about 1764.
  • The tenth London was a ship of the line second class with 90 cannons, which was launched in 1766 and scrapped in 1811.
  • The eleventh London was a ship of the line first class with 104 guns, which was launched in 1828. It was later renamed the Royal Adelaide and in 1905 sold for demolition.
  • The twelfth London was a ship of the line second with 92 cannons, which ran from the pile in 1840, 1858 and received a propeller drive in 1884 sold for demolition.
  • The thirteenth London was a battleship of the Formidable -Class, launched in 1899, in 1918 converted into a minelayer in 1920 and sold for scrapping.
  • The fourteenth London ( 69 ) was a heavy cruiser of the County class, which was launched in 1927 and scrapped in 1950.
  • The fifteenth London (D16 ) was a guided missile destroyer of a new County - class, was launched in 1961 and sold in 1982 to Pakistan, where she was named Babur.
  • The sixteenth London ( F95 ) was a frigate of Broadsword - class (Type 22), which was launched in 1984 and was sold to Romania in 2002, where it received the name Regina Maria.
