The HMS Southampton ( C83 ) was a light cruiser of the Town class of 1936 and was among the first group of five ships of this class that have been referred by her as a Southampton class. She was the fifth ship of the Royal Navy, named after the town of Southampton. She ran from 1936 batch, took part in numerous operations during the Second World War and was hit by several bombs east of Malta on 11 January 1941. The heavily damaged and unpowered ship was sunk by a torpedo HMS Gloucester and four torpedoes of HMS Orion.
