HMS Tireless (S88)

The HMS Tireless ( S88 ) is a nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy and is a member of the Trafalgar class.

History

The Tireless in 1979 at Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd (now BAE Systems ) ordered and 1981 laid the keel. Launching and naming ceremony took place in 1984, the entry into a year later.

In the following years, the Tireless moved to several exercises in the world, 1991, she visited among others the Arctic. In early 1996, followed by the first major overhaul, which lasted until 1999.

On May 12, 2000, there were, during the Tireless in the Mediterranean was traveling, a loss of the convection of the coolant in the reactor. For this reason, the submarine ran to the port of Gibraltar. While the Royal Navy at first it went out, to be able to replace the faulty coolant pump within a few days, it took almost a year, until May 2, 2001 until the Tireless was able to leave the harbor, which led to tensions between the governments in London and Madrid.

On April 19, 2004, the Tireless met with the American submarine of the Los Angeles-class, USS Hampton ( SSN -767 ), under the North Pole and appeared there on through Arctic ice. On 9 July 2004, the Tireless had to turn into the port of Gibraltar, after there were unspecified technical problems. This angered the Spanish Government, also because on July 21, was held the 300th anniversary of the conquest of Gibraltar. However, the Tireless left port already on July 15 again.

2007 drove the Tireless with the American USS Alexandria ( SSN- 757) an exercise under Arctic ice. On March 21, it exploded 274 km north of Alaska, an oxygen candle on board, the two sailors Paul McCann and Anthony Huntrod were killed and another was injured. The reactor on board remained undamaged. The injured sailor was flown by the U.S. Air National Guard to Anchorage.

In April 2014, the Tireless took part in the Indian Ocean on the search for the lost Boeing 777 from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
