Hocicudo

The grave mice ( Oxymycterus ) are a genus of rodent living in South America, the group of the New world. They comprise 16 species.

These rodents reach a body length 9-17 centimeters, the tail is 7 to 15 inches. The weight is only known from a type O. rufus weighs 45-125 grams. Your thin fur is reddish, yellowish brown, dark brown or black on the top, the underside is lighter. The snout is elongated, the relatively short tail is hairy sparse to moderate.

They live in middle America, its range extends from the central Peru and Bolivia over large parts of Brazil to northern Argentina. Their habitat are swamps, grasslands and woodlands.

They live in underground burrows which they have taken from other animals, or on the ground. At least one type is O. rufus, diurnal. These animals feed primarily on insects, in addition they also eat other invertebrates and occasionally plants. Thus, they are similar in lifestyle the North American grasshopper mice ( Onychomys ). Several times a year the female gives birth to a six pups.

  • Oxymycterus Hiska is known only from a small area in south-eastern Peru and northwestern Bolivia. The species is endangered according to IUCN.
  • Oxymycterus hispidus inhabited southeastern Brazil.
  • Oxymycterus hucucha is known only from a small area of ​​central Bolivia and is considered endangered.
  • Oxymycterus inca inhabited southern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • Oxymycterus josei occurs in Uruguay.
  • Oxymycterus nasutus inhabits Southeast Brazil and Uruguay.
  • Oxymycterus paramensis is common in the Andes of southern Peru to northern Argentina.
  • Oxymycterus quaestor lives in Southeastern Brazil and Northeast Argentina.
  • Oxymycterus roberti is native to eastern Brazil.
  • Oxymycterus rufus inhabited the eastern Argentina.

According to IUCN are two types, O. and O. Hiska hucucha at risk ( vulnerable ).
