Former subglacial lake

The Hodgson Lake is a continuously ice -covered lake on the Alexander I Island in the Antarctic. Located just south of Saturn Glacier and southeast of the Citadel Bastion. The freshwater lake is 2 km long, 1.5 km wide and 93.4 m deep. It is covered by a 3.6 to 4.0 m thick layer of ice that has it for thousands of years isolated from the outside world. In the last ice age 10,500 years ago, he was as subglacial lake under ice cover at least 465 m thick. The lake was discovered in 2000 by British Paläolimnologen Dominic A. Hodgson.

In 2013, it was verified in a drill core from the sediment of Lake Hodgson that the lake was home in his subglacial phase of life.
