It rises on the southern flank of the Brooks Range in the southern National Preserve of the Gates -of-the - Arctic National Park, flows southwest, crossing the Arctic Circle and flows 51 km west-southwest of Hughes in the Koyukuk River. The Hogatza River is part of the river system of the Yukon River.

" Hogatza ", the name of the original inhabitants of the river, was documented in 1885 by Lieutenant Allen. The names " Kokachatna " and " Kokachutna ", the Lieutenant Stoney in 1900 reported that probably referred to the same body of water.
