Hoh Xil

Hoh Xil ( Mongolian: Хөхшил / Köke sil ) is a remote region in the northwest of the Qinghai -Tibet plateau. It is the least populated region of China.

Hoh Xil lies between the Kunlun Mountains and the Dangla Mountains on the border of Qinghai to Tibet and Xinjiang in the circles Zhidoi (治 多 县) and Zadoi (杂 多 县) Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu Tibetan. The region comprises 83,000 km ² and has an average of 4800 m high. It is the catchment area of the Yangtze River and in 1995 declared a national nature reserve. The Qinghai- Tibet Railway runs along the eastern edge of the area.

Despite the extreme geographical and climatic conditions found in Hoh Xil over 230 wildlife species, 20 of which are under protection, including the Tibetan antelope. The fight against poachers in Hoh xil is the subject of Chinese film Kekexili - Mountain Patrol from the year 2004.
