The airfield Hohenems - Dornbirn is an Austrian airfield in the municipal area of ​​the city Vorarlberg Hohenems. He is the only airfield ( with the exception of three heliports in Feldkirch, Ludesch and Nenzing ) in Vorarlberg.

The airfield is located in Ried near the road Vorarlberg (L 190) in the municipal area of ​​the city of Hohenems.

History

Before the Second World War there were in Vorarlberg some small airfields that were used primarily for the sport of soaring with cable winch launch. In the 30s of the 20th century there were first considerations for an airfield in Bregenz and later the idea of ​​a regional airport in the reed stand west of Dornbirn in the room.

In the 50s there were plans for a major airport in maximum, which have also run in the sand soon.

As early as 1949, when the Sportfluggruppe Hohenems after the war formed again, this was a new appropriate airfield north of the city in the plot Seemähder - at the place where today there is still the airfield. First, on grass, took off and landed later on gravel. There was more and more the desire for a runway. Several other smaller airfields in Frastanz, Götzis, Lustenau and Dornbirn were only very provisionally used and due to the location hardly expandable. For this reason, the airfield in Hohenems was expanded to the national airport. Since this would have exceeded the financial capabilities of Sportfluggruppe Hohenems, the airfield was taken over by the Vorarlberg Aero Club, which still operates it today.

In the 60s, the infrastructure has continued to expand. There was a hangar, a terminal building and a gas station on the premises.

In 2005, the last major renovation of the airport, the construction of a new control was completed.

Use

The airfield is used by the Vorarlberg Sportflieger groups for their activities. Since December 15, 1968 an air base of the Austrian air police is decorated in Hohenems. Here a police helicopter is stationed, which was used until 2000, together with the rescue organizations for rescue flights. Since 2001, the helicopter is available exclusively for police assignments.

In 1973, the Rhine Valley Flight was founded with the home airfield Hohenems - Dornbirn. Initially, only taxi flights were later carried out from 1984 also regular flights to Vienna and holiday flights. Due to the insufficient capacity or to short runway in Hohenems, the company was the end of the 80s to the Airport St. Gallen -Altenrhein laid.
