Holguín Province

Holguín is a province in north-east Cuba. Its capital is the city of Holguín. Until the administrative reform in 1976, she was part of the much larger province of Oriente. The sugar and coffee production and mining are the most economically important industries in the province.

Geography

The Holguín province has a total area of ​​9215.72 km ². In the north, the Atlantic Ocean forms a natural border in the southeast and south, the provinces of Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba. The provinces of Granma and Las Tunas join in the southwest and northwest.

History

On October 28, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba on his first voyage of discovery. At the site of today's municipios Rafael Freyre he first stepped onto Cuban soil.

World's most famous sons of the province are the brothers Fidel and Raúl Castro. Also dictator Fulgencio Batista comes from here.

Administrative divisions

The Holguín province is divided into 14 municipios. With the exception of Calixto Garcia, Frank País and Rafael Freyre management seats are located in the same cities.
