Hollow way

A Saviour is a way that is bounded on both sides by a hedge or a kink.

The name comes from Low German, meaning " path between two occupied with hedges ditches ", where at that time was referred to as " ditch " a Wall.

It often happened that due to the Verkoppelungsgesetzes of 1770, each field was bordered with Knicks. It was found that the routes received on both sides Knicks. Through the hedges along paths adjacent fields were also protected against the over -driven cattle.

Redder play a special role in the ecosystem. While in a simple bend of 1 km in length brooding about 30 pairs of birds, the breeding pair density can rise in a double kink up to 6 times. Redder are not only as an optical element structure, but also ecologically valuable for cultural landscapes. Their construction not only provide habitat for birds, but also for invertebrates and mammals that originate partly comparable forest structures.

Especially valuable are Redder with entrapped dirt road, but even paved roads are often shaded so that their barrier effect is reduced significantly, especially for amphibians. Knicks and Saviour are also parts of large-scale biotope networks.

The term Redder is particularly characteristic of the region that is now Schleswig -Holstein. The part " Redder " contain street names in Hamburg (eg " Reinbeker Saviour " ) and Lower Saxony ( eg Celle: "Small Saviour ").
