Holodiscus argenteus

The foam spars ( Holodiscus ) are a genus of shrubs in the family Rosaceae. Its distribution area is located in North, Central and South America.

Description

The foam spars are mostly deciduous, more or less hairy shrubs with gray, often overhanging branches and along aufreißende in the first year bark. The buds are elongated and densely hairy pale towards the tip. Terminal buds are 3-5 mm long, 2-3 mm lateral buds. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are simple with an egg-shaped, coarsely toothed, incised or fiederschnittigen leaf blade. Stipules absent.

The flowers are numerous in up to 20 centimeters long, loose, terminal panicles and usually overhanging. The individual flowers are 4-5 mm wide, the calyx is deeply five-lobed, the five white to zertrosafarbenen petals are only slightly longer than the calyx. The outer 15 of the 20 stamens are fused at the base. The five carpels sit in an open flower cups and are hairy striking. As a fruit -seeded, dehiscent not nutlets are formed.

Dissemination

The distribution area of ​​about eight species ranges from British Columbia in Canada through the United States and Central America to Colombia.

System

The foam spars ( Holodiscus ) are a genus of the rose family ( Rosaceae ). There they are assigned to the subfamily Spiraeoideae, Tribe Spiraeeae. Karl Heinrich Koch first described the genus in 1869, Carl Maximowicz led in 1879 by a new arrangement. The selected cooking genus name comes from the Greek holos for "whole" or "complete", and the Latin discus slice. However, the motives for naming are unclear.

Use

Only the forest foam spar ( Holodiscus discolor) is often used as an ornamental because of its decorative flowers.
