Home Ministry

The Naimu - shō (Japanese内务 省, " Ministry of Internal Affairs " ) was one of the most powerful ministries of the central government in the Japanese Empire.

1873 established part of his duties internal security, the police, the regional administrations, public works, until 1938, the social and health services and after the dissolution of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (教 部 省, Kyobu - shō ) 1877, the Heads of State Shinto. From 1897 up to the ( re) establishment of the Colonial Office in 1929 it also had the oversight of the General Government ( sōtokufu ) Japanese colony of Taiwan. 1947 it was resolved by the Cabinet after Katayama arrangements of the occupation authorities (GHQ / SCAP ).

Most important successor authorities were established in 1938 Ministry of Social Affairs and by the resolution 1947:

  • For the police, the National Public Safety Commission and the National Police Agency,
  • For the construction industry, the Ministry of Construction - today and part of the MLIT
  • For local administrations, the " Ministry of self-government" and the authorities themselves, the governors of prefectures and the mayors of wards of Tokyo were elected by the people in 1947.

The " Special Higher Police " Tokubetsu Keisatsu Kōtō, which functioned as a political security and perceived intelligence tasks was dissolved in 1945 by SCAP.
