Homeless World Cup

The World Cup of the homeless (English: Homeless World Cup, HWC ) is a supported by the UN and UEFA and the International Network of Street News Papers ( INSP ) oriented international street soccer tournament, which is held annually since 2003, the homeless in to support the reintegration into society. Eligible once you are in life. A game lasts for 2x7 minutes.

Eligibility

All male and female players must be 16 years of age and may not have participated in any previous HWC. In addition, at least one additional requirement must be met:

  • At least temporarily ( the national applicable legislation ) homelessness in the year before the World Cup ( two years with players in alcohol or drug rehabilitation programs )
  • Livelihood is denied as a street newspaper vendor
  • Asylum seekers without positive or abgelehntem notice (up to two per participant Nation)

History

In the INSP ( International Network of Street Papers ) Conference 2001 in Cape Town, the idea of the Homeless World Cup of Mel Young and Harald Schmied was presented. This idea was adopted by the representatives of street papers and 18 months later held the first tournament in Graz, supported by the street newspaper megaphone. Subsequently, an annual event with changing venues emerged.

The aim of the event is to bring through effective media sporting event people out of homelessness under the slogan " Kick Off Poverty " back into regular housing conditions.

The attention of the media support reinforced the commitment of partners and sponsors, at the international level ( such as Nike, Philips, Salesforce ) or at each national level ( such as Manchester United or Kaizer Chiefs) individual topics or the respective event. In addition, from the beginning of the next INSP also UEFA and United Nations partners.

In 2005, the project was awarded with the UEFA Charity Cheque. The prize of CHF 1 million check was handed over on 26 August of Ronaldinho to Harald Schmied and Mel Young.

At the tournament in 2011 in Paris come to 64 teams, 50,000 visitors are expected.
