Honoratus

Honoratus of Arles (* in Belgian Gaul, † 16 January 429 or 430 in Arles ) was a bishop in the southern French town of Arles in the 5th century and is a saint.

Honoratus came from a consul family and was made ​​accordingly. He converted to Christianity as a teenager already. At first he lived in a hermitage in Greece. Later he returned to Gaul and lived in seclusion in the mountains of Fréjus. After his ordination as a priest, he founded on the island of Saint- Honorat ( Lerins ) a monastery according to oriental model, the Abbey of Lérins, which was strongly influenced by ascetic and developed into an intellectual center of Gaul soon. In the year 426 Honoratus was ordained against his will to the bishop of Arles. His term of office was marked by devotion and charity.
