Horchata

Horchata de chufa (Spanish [ ɔɾʧata dE ʧufa ], Valencian / Catalan Orxata de Xufes, even horchata ) is a soft drink from tiger nuts, which comes from the region of Valencia.

The popular drink in Spain has its origins in the village of Alboraya. There the tiger nut is grown to a great extent. Their tubers are washed and ground, softened and pressed in multiple passes. By adding sugar and water to the extract obtained therefrom then creates the milky fluid, rich in vitamins and minerals, including phosphorus, potassium, vitamin C and vitamin E.

In the horchaterías (milk bars, ice cream ), the Horchata de chufa is freshly prepared and served ice cold as it spoils quickly. Often this warm fartons, an elongated pastries for dipping offered.

Just as there are pretzel stands in major German cities, mobile stalls are set up in Valencia on many street corners where you can enjoy the fresh cups of horchata. It is also possible to acquire the Erdmandelknollen in small cloth bags, with which one can prepare the drink at home.
