The municipality is located in the north of Iceland Hörgársveit in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 lived in the municipality 606 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located on the west bank of the Eyjafjörður. Includes, among other things, the valleys Öxnadalur and Hörgárdalur with the court Möðruvellir well as the places Lónsbakki with 92 and Hjalteyri with 43 ​​inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009).

The nearest major town is Akureyri.

History

The municipality was created Hörgársveit 12 June 2010 through a merger of the municipalities Hörgárbyggð and Arnarnes ( Arnarneshreppur ).

The former municipality Hörgárbyggð was on 1 January 2001 by the merger of rural communities Skriða ( Skriðuhreppur ), emerged Öxnadalur ( Öxnadalshreppur ) and Glæsibær ( Glæsibæjarhreppur ). The main town of the former municipality Arnarnes was Hjalteyri.

Both former municipalities members of incorporation to Akureyri in a referendum on October 8, 2005, a cancellation.
