Hosea Moffitt

Hosea Moffitt (* November 17, 1757 in Stephentown, New York; † August 31, 1825 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1813 and 1817 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Hosea Moffitt grew up during the British colonial period. During the Revolutionary War he served as Ensign and later as a Lieutenant in the Second Battalion of the Rensselaerwyck fourth Regiment of Albany County Militia. He was justice of the peace in 1791 and in the years 1791 and 1797 town clerk (town clerk ). In the years 1794, 1795 and 1801 he sat in the New York State Assembly. He was appointed brigadier general in the militia on 22 March 1806. Between 1806 and 1809 he was Town Supervisor in Stephentown. He was then in the years 1810 and 1811 in the Rensselaer County Sheriff. Politically, he was a member of the Federalist Party.

In the congressional elections of 1812, for the 13th Congress, he was in the tenth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Silas Stow on March 4, 1813. After a successful re-election in 1814, he retired after March 3, 1817 out of the Congress.

Moffitt was in 1815 a member of the Executive Board (Board of Managers ) of the Rensselaer County Bible Society. He died on August 31, 1825 in Stephentown, and then was buried there in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery on " Presbyterian Hill " at Garfield.

Family

He was with Elizabeth Hall (1759-1839), daughter of Martha Brown and Rowland Hall, married. The couple had seven children together:
