Houegbadja

Aho Houegbadja was the third king of Dahomey. He succeeded his uncle Dakodonu, and reigned from 1645 to 1685.

Houegbadja was the first of the dynasty whose reign the center was in Abomey: he founded the city through the construction of his palace ( " Agbome " called - in the middle of the fortress rampart ). He was a wise ruler, respected by his people. He enacted laws, named minister and developed a powerful bureaucracy. He developed a religious cult and a political culture that were characteristic of Dahomey. Houegbadjas symbols were fish, fish trap and stick.

Houegbadjas was succeeded by his son Houessou Aqaba.
