The Houghton Fire Hall, officially Continental Fire Company Building, is a former fire station at the corner of Huron Street and Montezuma Avenue in Houghton, Michigan, United States. In the building of the Michigan Mining School had taken their beginnings. The building is classified as a Michigan State Historic Site.

History

The Continental Fire Company was founded in 1860 in Houghton. The first fire station was built in 1861 on the shore of Lake Superior, about as what is now the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

A new fire station was built in 1883 at the corner of Huron Street and Montezuma Street. The Continental Fire Company used the basement, were housed in the horse and the ground floor, where the syringe cars were parked. On the second floor offices of the local administration were. The Michigan Mining School, now the Michigan Technological University, held from 1886 to 1889 their lectures in these premises from. In the early years of the 20th century, the building was extended on the north side, in order to store more oats and hay for the horses. 1916 was built on the west side to accommodate two more fire trucks.

The city gave up their offices in the fire station in the 1930s. On August 5, 1966 bronze memorial plaque was unveiled commemorating the former use of the building as a university building. 1974 moved into the fire a new, more centrally located fire station, which was built at the Sharon Avenue to accommodate more space -requiring more advanced equipment. The fire bell was removed in October 1975 and taken to the new fire station. The western extension has been sold and has hosted a trade for car accessories.

The fire station was classified as a Michigan State Historic Site on August 6, 1976. 1978 bought the University of the building from the city, to use it as a storage building. It was sold in 2010 to a private group that renovated it and transformed it into an entertainment operation in February 2012.

Architecture

The fire station is a flat roof building with three floors - two full floors above ground and the basement - brick in the Italianate style. The foundation is brick and rubble stone and painted white. A small, square clock tower was originally located on the dome at the front of the building. The vertical space served as a hose tower for drying fire hoses.
