House of Assembly of Barbados

The House of Assembly ( German: meeting house ) is the lower house in the bicameral legislature of Barbados.

The origins of Parliament go back to the year 1639, when the members of the House of Burgesses, forerunner of the House of Assembly, along came the first meeting.

It consists of 30 members, who are elected for five years in 30 constituencies by majority voting system. Active eligible to vote are citizens of Barbados, as well as citizens of other Commonwealth countries who live in Barbados for at least three years. The minimum age is 18 years. Passive right to vote are citizens of Barbados, who are at least 21 years old.

In the last election on 21 February 2013, the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP ) remained the strongest party, but lost four seats. The opposition Barbados Labour Party ( BLP ) won four seats to do so. The new distribution of seats is as follows:

  • Democratic Labour Party 16
  • Barbados Labour Party 14
