House Order of the Golden Lion (Hesse-Kassel)

The House Order of the Golden Lion was the highest award of Hesse- Kassel, and the Electorate of Hesse and the Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine.

History

It was donated on August 14, 1770 by the Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse -Kassel in a class. Saint was Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, ancestress of the founder. The order was intended to reward and appreciation of excellent merits and as house decorations. Elector Wilhelm I extended it with statutes supplement dated January 1, 1818 to three classes. On August 20, 1851, the Order was instituted separate Wilhelm from the extension classes of the year in 1818 by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm I..

After the occupation of Electoral Hesse by Prussia in 1866, the House Order of the Golden Lion was taken in the series the Royal Prussian Order. The order of the number of the latter was re- painted by order of 27 August 1875.

After the death of the last Elector of Hesse -Kassel, the Order of Grand Duke Ludwig II was acquired by Hesse-Darmstadt. He gave him new statutes on June 6, 1876, appointed him as the new Grand-Ducal Order. He was equal to the Grand Cross of the Order of Louis. With the abdication of the last Grand Duke of Hesse -Darmstadt in 1918, the Order went out for good.

Order characters

The religious character consists of a crowned golden lion within a golden oval tire

The ribbon is crimson in widths for sash, neck Cross ( Commendatore ) and pectoral cross ( Ritter).

Others

The House Order of the Golden Lion was introduced in 1858 by Duke Adolf of Nassau in his state as Merit. After the annexation of the Duchy of Nassau by Prussia in 1866 but in 1882 by King William III. the Netherlands taken over and continued.
