Howard Cooke

Sir Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke, ON, GCMG, GCVO, CD ( born November 13, 1915 in Jamaica) was from 1 August 1991 to 15 February 2006 the Governor General of Jamaica.

Life

In recent years, Cooke worked as a teacher and became chairman of the Jamaica Union of Teachers. During this time he also worked for the insurance industry. In 1958 he became a deputy in the Parliament of the West Indies Federation, and after 1962, when Jamaica gained independence, Senator and Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives of the country. In the 1970s he was active as a minister in the government led by Michael Manley. Cooke's tenure as Governor-General began on 1 August 1991.

At the end of his term as Governor-General, at the beginning of 2006, he certified as the first official owner of his successor Kenneth Hall.
