Howard Hughes Medical Institute

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute ( HHMI ) is a group of research laboratories in the United States. The organization is based in Chevy Chase, Maryland. It was founded in 1953 by the American businessman Howard Hughes. With an endowment of 17.5 billion U.S. dollars, it is one of the richest foundations in America.

President of HHMI since 2009, Robert Tjian, its predecessor was Thomas R. Cech. Since 2003, Gerald M. Rubin Director of the HHMI Janelia Farm Research operated by the campus.
