Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle ( born March 5, 1853 in Wilmington, USA, † November 9, 1911 in Florence, Italy) was an American illustrator and author.

Life

Howard Pyle came from a Quaker family from Delaware. He studied art and learned among other things, in Belgium. In addition to his work in the family business, he never ceased to write stories and illustrate, and sent in 1876 an illustrated poem to the Scribner 's Magazine in New York. In 1883 he published his first children's book The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood.

From 1894 began Pyle at Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University) to teach and opened in 1900 its own, renowned art school Brandywine School. Some of his famous students were Olive Rush, Newell Convers Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Frank Schoonover and Jessie Willcox Smith.

In 1910 he went to Florence, where he died a year later, however, a kidney infection.
