Jessie Willcox Smith

Jessie Willcox Smith ( born September 6, 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † May 3, 1935 ibid ) was an American illustrator for magazines, children's and youth literature.

Life

Jessie was the daughter of Charles Henry Smith and his wife Katherine Dewitt. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins in 1888 and made their statements. A year later, she began working as an illustrator for the magazine Ladies' Home Journal. 1894 she enrolled at Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University ) and ended in 1902 under Howard Pyle's renowned art school whose study Brandywine School. In later years, she earned her living as an illustrator for posters, magazines, children 's books.
