Violet Oakley

Violet Oakley ( born June 10, 1874 in Bergen Heights, New Jersey, † February 25, 1961 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American painter, illustrator, writer and pacifist.

Life

Violet Oakley came from a respected family of artists. Her parents were Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain, both grandfathers were members of the National Academy of Design in New York. Early on it was recognized Oakleys talent. 1892 she studied at the Art Student 's League in New York, a year later, she went on a study trip to England and France. Upon her return to the United States in 1896, she enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Shortly thereafter, Oakley moved to Drexel University to Howard Pyle, the their work, which was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites admired. Violet Oakley was famous for its murals and frescoes. Later, she was a lecturer at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
