Howie Seago

Howie Seago ( born December 5, 1953 in Seattle, Washington ) is an American actor and theater director.

Life

Howie Seago is deaf from birth and grew exclusively on spoken language, as his also deaf father forbade him the learning of sign language. To sign language, he came when he graduated (psychology, theater studies ) recorded at California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles and came there in the theater group. Later Seago member of the touring theater National Theatre of the Deaf. There he discovered the director Peter Sellars and hired him five years later for the lead role in his theater production Ajax ( 1986), Seago made ​​known beyond the country's borders. In Europe, he appeared in roles in " The Forest " ( Germany, 1988), " The Persians " ( Salzburg Festival, Edinburgh Festival, 1993), Stravinsky's "Bible Pieces" ( Holland Festival, 1999) and in the Oscar-nominated movie " Beyond Silence " ( Germany, 1996). In this he plays the father of a hearing girl growing up with deaf parents. In the U.S., he had more film roles, including in television series.

Seago is committed to the recognition of sign language and the culture of the Deaf. On and around the stage Seago works with both deaf and with hearing people. In Austria he worked as a director for ARBOS - Company for Music and Theatre and as an actor at the Vienna Festival. In the Deaf community, he is actively engaged as an author and teacher. In the late 1970s, he worked on the production of the TV show " Rainbow's End " for deaf children. For ten years (1998-2008) he managed the project "Shared Reading Video Outreach Project" ( SRVOP ) at the Washington School for the Deaf ( WSD), integrates the deaf students by means of video technology in the communication network of educational institutions in the state of Washington.

Seago has won several awards, including the Helen Hayes Award. He currently works for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF ) in Ashland, Oregon. He is married and has two sons.
