Hrazdan

Hrazdan (Armenian Հրազդան, scientific transliteration and English transcription Hrazdan, IPA: [ həraz'dan ] ) is the capital of the Armenian province of Kotayk.

Hrazdan is the fifth largest city of Armenia and has about 40,000 inhabitants ( 2005). It is located on the M4 motorway between Yerevan and Sevan. In Soviet times, Hrazdan was one of the most important industrial centers of the Armenian SSR. The name of the city and the river flowing past her Hrazdan goes back to the Middle Persian word Phrasdana.

In the suburb Makravan the Mother of God Church of the Monastery Makravank was restored in the 13th century. An associated chapel from the 11th century and a Gawit are only preserved as ruins.
