HTCondor

HTCondor (formerly Condor ) is a so-called batch software, which is used in large computer networks. Condor is used to gain time for numerical computations by workstation computers are joined to form a Condor pool.

History

Condor is developed since 1988 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA) and continuously improved. At the beginning of this software was developed for UNIX, meanwhile, however, Condor can also install on Linux, Windows, Solaris, and Mac OS. However, there are some features of Condor, which are available only under UNIX / Linux.

From Condor are always two versions available, the so-called stable release and the development release. The stable release is adequately tested and should be installed in genuine Condor pools, however, in the development release you will find new features that have not yet been adequately tested. The development release should be installed only in small test pools.

Operation

A computer or server of the Condor pool is to take over the work of the Central Manager. This Central Manager has the task of managing the pool. The clients are the real Condor pool. The clients have two tasks. First, it should process the jobs and on the other should one of them from jobs can submit.

Condor can be configured so that it only runs jobs when the user has performed over a specified period of time no inputs, so the computer is not used. Once again take place mouse or keyboard input, a running job is stopped and handed over to a possibly free computer.
