Huamachuco is the capital of the province Sánchez Carrión in the Peruvian region of La Libertad. The city's name is derived from the formerly resident there people of the Wamachukos.

History

The city was (or according to other sources 1554 ) founded in 1553 by the Augustinians. In January 1821, the independence of the Spanish crown was in Huamachuco declared ( after the declaration in Trujillo but before in Lima). Simón Bolívar and José Faustino Sánchez Carrión organized from here the liberation army with strong support of the local population. Geography
