Huambo is a province in Angola. With an area of 34,270 km ², it is one of the smaller provinces and centrally located about 450 km south-east of Luanda in Angola. The capital is called Huambo Nova Lisboa in colonial times ( New Lisbon).

Vegetation and geology

About the Province extends a central plateau, peaking in the many individual rocks. The most famous is the Moco in Londuimbali, which is 2,619 m also the highest peak in Angola.

What is striking is the growing difference between the plateau and the lower levels. Characteristic of the latter are baobab trees and grassland.

The soil is generally of poor quality. In many areas it is additionally depleted by erosion and overuse, but he is better than in other areas in the north, south and east of Angola. Traditional agriculture, slash-and- over population, after the people had left their homes during the 1975-2002 war, caused considerable damage to the trees and forest stands. In addition to the 1980s, wood was used as fuel for the Benguela railway. In many places indigenous forests have been replaced by fast growing, but the floor is very beanspruchende pine and eucalyptus trees.

Climate

The area is indeed in the tropical climate zone, but the degree and effect of the Antarctic current produce a temperate climate. The annual temperature difference is low and varies 17-28 ° C, with an average temperature of 22 ° C. During the winter months from May to July, the temperatures drop to 8-5 ° C. The rainfall, depending on the region, is 800 to 1600 mm. In the high level, the rainy season begins with short rains in September, rising in October and November to continue, then have a break of 2 to 4 weeks in December, January or February, and finally last until the end of April. The heaviest rainfalls are usually in November and December.

Geography and population

Huambo borders the province of Cuanza Sul in the northwest, Bié the north and east, Benguela on the west and the south Huíla. It is divided into eleven districts, which in turn is divided into 37 municipalities.

The province has about 1.9 million inhabitants (15 % of the population of Angola ), of which about 55 % live in the cities, most of them in the capital. Large population movements to rural areas and deficiencies in the administration make a population determination difficult. It is estimated that 419,000 people or 22% of the total population are children under five years. Almost all the inhabitants of the province belong to the ethnic group of the Ovimbundu.
