Subdivisions of Angola

The administrative divisions of Angola is the vertical administrative structure of the Republic of Angola in southwest Africa. The country is divided into 18 provinces ( provincias ), resulting in a total of 173 counties ( municipios ) members, which in turn are composed of 618 municipalities ( Comunas ).

Historically, the present-day administrative divisions of Angola from its 500 -year history has developed as part of the Portuguese colonial empire. This also parallels to the administrative divisions of Portugal in structure and terminology to explain.

Provinces

The 18 provinces of Angola roughly correspond to the NUTS - 1 regions in Europe and thus, for example, the federal states in Germany.

The Angolan provinces including the controversial Cabinda province, in which the independence movement FLEC fighting for the separation of the Cabinda exclave of Angola. Cabinda was not directly to Angola, to the Alvor Agreement, the 1975 Angola's independence from Portugal was sealed. To date, Cabinda enjoys no autonomy or other special rules relating to the status of a regular Angolan province beyond.

Circles

The 18 provinces of Angola are divided into 173 districts. Named after the Portuguese term Municipio counties are similar to the European NUTS 2 regions, these are eg in Germany the government districts. Part bear the circles the name of the county town, and partly diverge from it. A variety of original Portuguese names were given new names after independence in 1975, in the wake of Entkolonialisierungsbemühungen.

Due to the often large municipios an administrative reform is under discussion. The number of originally 157 counties has been repeatedly raised to 173 now. With the planned reform, new municipios are to be created, with a new total number of expected 237 This is seen as a further step towards a future Local Self-Government. So that the country shall seek to further development in the area, under the future greater consideration of local needs and opportunities.

Communities

The now 173 districts of Angola were composed of a total of 618 municipalities, Comunas, German municipalities. The municipalities are similar to the European NUTS 3 regions, and thus, for example, the usual in Germany counties, in Angola no comparable status to the known in Germany independent city exists.

Within the Comunas are the actual localities ( Localidades ). Larger cities often bear the already derived from Portuguese times and further used to date markings small town ( Vila ) or city ( Cidade ). With aldeias contrast, villages and smaller places are called.
