States of Sudan

This list of the Sudanese states points to the current state of the states in Sudan since July 9, 2011 and the independent state of South Sudan and its historical development. The historical account begins in 1919 with the first provinces of the Anglo -Egyptian Sudan, continues with the changes in the administrative structure in the independent Republic of Sudan since 1956, via the introduction of the first states in 1991, which in 1994 replaced by the current states of the current situation after the independence of South Sudan.

Sudan has been since 2005 in 25 states (Arabic wilayat ) divided that are divided into a total of 133 districts. Each state is administered by a governor and his Council of Ministers. Current Situation

The 10 southern states form the independent state of South Sudan since 9 July 2011. In the referendum on independence of South Sudan, which was performed according to the peace agreement from 9 to 15 January 2011, around 99 % of South Sudanese voting for independence spoke of. Provinces 1919-1948

The eight provinces of the Anglo -Egyptian Sudan were initially not clearly defined. But with the beginning of World War II, the boundaries were clearly defined and set up as follows:

Provinces 1948-1973

On the Juba Conference 1947, the administrative annexation of Equatoria in Sudan was decided. As a result, in 1948 Bahr el Ghazal was cleaved from the province of Equatoria in to manage the area better. The remaining provinces remained unchanged. At independence in 1956, Sudan's provinces have been retained.

Provinces 1973-1974

The province of al -Bahr al Red Sea (Red Sea ) was spun off in 1973 by the province of Kassala.

Provinces 1974-1976

In 1974, some provinces were divided into smaller provinces. The Darfur province was divided into North Darfur and South Darfur. The provinces of al - Jazeera and al - Abyad Nile ( White Nile ) were split off from the province of al - azraq Nile ( Blue Nile ). States 1991-1994

1991 was a federal system with 9 states that correspond to the nine provinces from 1948 to 1973, introduced.
