South Darfur

Dschanub Darfur (Arabic جنوب دارفور, German South Darfur ) is a state in Sudan.

It has an area of 127,300 km ² and according to the census of 2008, around 4 million inhabitants, a statement which, however, is controversial, since it is significantly different from previous estimates ( 2.15 million ) and also in the context of large-scale evictions in the Darfur conflict stands. Capital of the state is Nyala.

Geography

The vegetation of Dschanub Darfur is characterized by a transition region between wet and dry savannas. The Bahr al-Arab is roughly the border to South Sudan.

Another place next to the capital Nyala is Kafia Kingi.

History

From 1919 to 1974, the area that is now the state of Darfur Dschanub belonged to the province of Darfur. In 1974, the province Dschanub Darfur was split off, they then also included the southern part of West Darfur. 1991-1994 was again throughout Darfur united in the state of Darfur, the possible within the limits of the province of Darfur from 1919 to 1974. On 14 February 1994 was created by the division of Darfur into three states of Darfur Dschanub state in its present form.

In 1960, the area around Kafia Kingi from the neighboring Southern Bahr al - Ghazal was spun (now the state of Western Bahr el Ghazal in southern Sudan ) and transferred to the former province of Darfur. It has since been disputed between north and south Sudan.

Economy

There are several oil fields, from which the oil is transported by pipeline to Khartoum.

Infrastructure

The capital Nyala is the terminus of the railway line from the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
