Al Jazirah (state)

Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة al - Jazeera, al - DMG Ǧazīra, German island, alternative spellings al -Jazeera, al - Gezira or al - Jazirah ) is a state in Sudan.

It has an area of 23,373 km ² and about 3.6 million inhabitants. Its capital is Wad Madani.

Geography

Al- Jazeera is located southeast of the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The Blue Nile runs through the province and the White Nile forms the western boundary. The relief is characterized by the Jazirah level, which is only a few small surveys, such as the mountain Muya, interrupted.

History

From 1919 to 1976, the territory of today's state of al - Jazirah belonged to the province of Nile al - azraq ( Blue Nile ), which included the territories of present-day states of Nile al - Abyad, at Nile al - azraq and Sennar. 1976, this province was divided into three provinces, while the province of al - Jazeera was built on the present territory of the state. From 1991 to 1994 the area of al - Jazeera again belonged to the newly created state of al - Wusta, the possible within the limits of the province of al - Nil - azraq 1919-1974. Economy

Al Jazeera is one of the most fertile states of Sudan. Irrigation projects begun in the 1920s ( Jazirah project) promoted particularly the cultivation of cotton.

Education

The provincial capital Wad Madani on the banks of the Blue Nile is home to the University of al - Jazirah.
