West Darfur

Gharb Darfur (Arabic غرب دارفور, German West Darfur ) is a state in Sudan.

It has an area of 79,460 km ² and according to the census of 2008, around 1.3 million inhabitants, a statement which is, however, disputed, as it is in the context of the Darfur conflict and a number of areas as well as all the centers were not included. Its capital is al - Dschunaina.

Geography

Gharb Darfur is the westernmost state of Sudan and is part of the Sahel. Gharb Darfur is a mountainous region that still better conditions for agriculture than many other areas in Sudan.

History

From 1919 to 1974, the area that is now the state of West Darfur belonged to the province of Darfur. 1974 this province was divided into a southern and a northern province, so that the area of West Darfur was in the north of the province Schamal Darfur and in the south of the province Dschanub Darfur. From 1991 to 1994 the area of Gharb Darfur again belonged to the newly created state of Darfur, the possible within the limits of the province of Darfur from 1919 to 1974. On 14 February 1994 Darfur was divided again, this time in the three states Schamal, Dschanub and West Darfur.
