River Nile (state)

Nahr an - Nil (Arabic نهر النيل, German Nilfluss ) is a state of Sudan.

It has an area of 122,123 km ², a population of 1,027,534 ( 2006 calculation ) and its capital is ad - Damir.

Geography

The name derives for the state is the Nile, which flows first here to the north, while at Atbara River Atbara receives and turns to the southwest in the further course. Parts of the state are flooded by the reservoir of the Merowe dam since August 2006.

Part of the Nubian Desert lies in Nahr an - Nil.

History

From 1919 to 1974, the territory of today's state of Nahr an - Nil both part of the province of al- Schamaliyya as well as a part of the province of Kassala. 1974 these parts were grouped with the province of Nahr an - Nil. In 1991, the province was dissolved in Nahr Nile again and assigned to the new states of al- Schamaliyya and ash Sharqiyah. On 14 February 1994, these parts were re- grouped, but this time as a federal state.
