Kassala (state)
Kassala (Arabic كسلا, DMG Kassala, also Kasala; 1991-1994 ash Sharqiyah, Arabic الشرقية " the East ") is a state located in the east of Sudan. The provincial capital Kassala lies near the border with Eritrea on the banks of the river Gasch.
The state has an area of 36,710 km ² and according to the census of 2008, some 1.8 million inhabitants.
History
From 1919 to 1956 Kassala was only a province of the Anglo -Egyptian Sudan, then a province of the independent Republic of the Sudan, and included the present-day states of al -Bahr al - ahmar, al - Qadarif and Kassala, as well as part of the current state of Nahr an - Nil. In 1973, the province of al -Bahr al was split Red Sea, which corresponded to the modern state of al -Bahr al - ahmar. 1974, a part of Kassala was cleaved together with part of the province of al- Nahr Schamaliyya to form the new province of Nile. In 1991, the province was transformed into a federal state and the limits of 1919-1973 were restored. This Kassala was renamed in al- Sharqiyah. On 14 February 1994, the states of al -Bahr al - ahmar, al - Qadarif and Sennar were split off and made the renaming reversed. In the north, again an area for the new state of Nahr was diverted to Nile.
