Lakes (state)

Lakes (Arabic البحيرات al - Buhairat, German: " Lakes" ) is a state in southern Sudan.

It has an area of 40,235 km ² and around 696,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Rumbek, another larger places are Yirol, Awerial, Cueibet, Mapuordit and Mvolo.

Geography

Lakes belongs to the South Sudanese Greater Region Bahr al - Ghazal and is characterized by a plane tree savannah, dominated in the acacias, as well as several lakes, of which the State has received its name.

Population

The largest ethnic group in Lakes are the Dinka ( with the subgroups Gok, CIEC, AliaB and Atuot ) next to them there is a minority of Jur -Bel.

History

From 1919 to 1948, the area that is now the State of Lakes of the province of Equatoria and from 1948 to 1976 belonged to the province of Bahr al - Ghazal, which was split from Equatoria in 1948. In 1976, the province of al - Buhairat that included the area of ​​the present states of Lakes and Warrap, split off from the province of Bahr al - Ghazal. From 1991 to 1994, the area belonged again to the newly created state of Bahr al - Ghazal, the possible within the limits of the province of Bahr al - Ghazal 1948-1976. On 14 February 1994 Lakes was split off again, but this time as a federal state and without the area of Warrap.

From the second Civil War in Southern Sudan 1983-2005 Lakes was less affected than other areas. In a disarmament in Rumbek in September 2008 SPLA soldiers committed looting and attacks against civilians.

The gubernatorial election in 2010 was won by the candidate of the SPLA, Chol Tong Mayay Jang.
