Hubert Luthe

Hubert Luthe ( May 22nd, 1927 in Lindlar, † February 4, 2014 in Essen ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Essen.

Life

Hubert Luthe, the eldest of eight children from the marriage of Hermann Luthe and Amalie, born Hasert, attended 1936-1946 Epiphany School in Cologne. He was from 1943 to 1945 Flakhelfer, in active military service and POW in Denmark. After graduating from 1946 to 1953 the study of Catholic theology and philosophy in Bonn and Munich, he attended the seminary of the Archdiocese of Cologne in Bensberg. On 2 July 1953, he received the priesthood in Cologne.

Until 1955 he worked as a chaplain at the Church of St. Immaculate Conception in downtown Düsseldorf and briefly religion teacher in Cologne, then to 1968 Archbishop's chaplain and private secretary to Joseph Cardinal Frings, whom he accompanied together with Joseph Ratzinger to all sessions of the Second Vatican Council. By special permission of Pope John XXIII. he was allowed because of the blindness Cardinal Frings ' as the only chaplain to participate in the deliberations of the Council.

After he had operated 1957-1959 further theological studies in Munich, he was in February 1964 in Munich with a dissertation on the topic of religion philosophy of Heinrich Scholz Dr. theol. doctorate. Since 16 August 1968, he was rector of the seminary priests Cologne.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on October 28, 1969 Titular Bishop of Egabro and auxiliary bishop in Cologne. The bishop He was ordained on December 14, 1969 by Joseph Cardinal Hoffner; Co-consecrators were Joseph Cardinal Frings of Cologne and the Auxiliary Bishops William Cleven and Augustine Frotz. His motto, which he kept in the Ruhr diocese, was Ut non evacuetur crux ( "The fact that the cross would not dismiss " ) and is taken from the first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 1.17 EU).

After the consecration Cardinal Hoffner appointed him Episcopal Vicar for matters of faith, ecumenism and the Diocesan Council. At the same time Resident canon in Cologne, he was responsible for the pastoral district of North since 1975 and was elected on 17 September 1987 Diocesan Administrator of the Archdiocese of Cologne, which he remained until February 2, 1989.

In 1979 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Furstenberg Grand Officer of the Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem and, Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy invested by German Franz Cardinal Hengsbach, on 10 November 1979. In 1975 he became honorary Konventualkaplan Order of Malta.

On 18 December 1991 by Pope John Paul II appointed the successor of the deceased in the same year Francis Cardinal Hengsbach as bishop of Essen, thus confirming the choice of the Essen cathedral chapter. On 2 February 1992, he took possession of his new place of work. He was a member of the commission for questions of faith and science and culture of the German Bishops' Conference. He spent over three decades officer of the Episcopal Conference for the Cusanuswerk, a church foundation for the support of students.

On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2002, Pope John Paul II to the usual after church law submitted resignation. The retired bishop lived since then in Hattingen - Niederwenigern until he retired in early December 2011 in the Princess - Franziska -Christine Foundation in Essen- Steele.

Luthe was the Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Joachim Meisner celebrated Requiem in Adveniatkrypta of Essen Cathedral beside the tomb of his predecessor buried after a February 8, 2014.
