Hubert Schoonbroodt

Hubert Schoonbroodt ( born August 8, 1941 in Eupen, † 5 February 1992 in Jalhay ) was a Belgian organist, oboist, conductor and choirmaster.

Life

Hubert Schoonbroodt made ​​his first education at the oboe, as a teenager at the Conservatory in Verviers, then in Paris. Back in Belgium, he studied at the " Lemmens Institute of Sacred Music " in Leuven organ and continued this study with Pierre Froidebise at the Liège Conservatoire. At the Schola Cantorum in Basel and at Antoine Geoffroy- Dechaume in Paris, he deepened his knowledge of early music. In 1962 he followed his teacher Froidebise in the post of Kapellmeister and organist at the "Big Seminar" in Liege. Since 1964 he was the first solo oboist of the Belgian National Orchestra. In 1969 he was appointed professor of organ at the " Royal Conservatory " in Liege, here Bernard Foccroulle was his most successful students. 10 years later, he received the same appointment to the Conservatory in Brussels.

Schoonbroodt championed the rediscovery of works of forgotten Belgian, especially Walloon composers, among others Lambert Chaumont, Henry Du Mont, Jean -Noël Hamal, Léonard de Hodémont, Pierre de la Rue, Pieter Van Maldere, Lambert Pietkin. Many of these works he performed as an organ soloist or with his chamber orchestra Camerata was founded in 1975 Leodiensis or played them on recordings.

In the last decades of his life he was an internationally renowned organ expert. He organized numerous restorations of historic organs in Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands. He died in the winter of 1992 as the result of a traffic accident.

Two of his children are also internationally successful musician: Aurore Schoonbroodt Doise, organ and violin, as well as Serge Schoonbroodt, organ and vocals.

As part of the King Baudouin Foundation is the biennial Hubert Schoonbroodt Prize, awarded for successful restoration of historic organs in Wallonia and Brussels
