The essential factor for the development of the museum was the nearby Army Aviation School, which is stationed at the Army airfield Biickeburg since 1960. There is also a large simulation center for helicopter training.

The beginnings of the museum date back to 1961. Over the years presented the aviation industry illustrative material for the small museum. The museum could only be used on duty, as it was in the military security area. It was only soldiers, special guests and registered schools around accessible.

1970 the museum moved then into the center of Biickeburg order, the city put the Munchausen Burgmannshof for growing, extensive helicopter collection. There, the helicopter museum was inaugurated and thus accessible to the general public on June 9, 1971. The exhibition area of the museum was expanded to include a 2,000 -square-foot production in the years 1978 to 1980.

In June 2011 - just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Helicopter Museum - the built in modern style extension to the public was made available after the existing exhibition thoroughly revised and modern museum educational requirements were adjusted.
