Hudson's Bay (retailer)

Hudson 's Bay is a Canadian retail chain with 90 stores in seven provinces of Canada and one of the major brands of Hudson 's Bay Company ( HBC). From 1965 to 2013, the retail chain operated under the name The Bay.

History

The first department store in the HBC was opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1881 under the name of the parent company Hudson 's Bay Company. Gradually, more stores were opened in western Canada, to 1960 through the acquisition of operating from Montreal trading company Morgan's also department stores in Quebec and Ontario to come.

1965, the hitherto existing as a nickname name The Bay has been adopted as the brand name for all department stores outside Quebec and the marketing agency Lippincott hired to create a suitable logo. In 1972 followed the branches in Quebec.

The acquisitions of Simpsons (1991) and Woodward's (1993 ) enlarged again, the number of department stores.

In the 1990s and 2000s The Bay was similar to many other department store chains increasingly in financial difficulties. Following the acquisition of the parent company by the U.S. investor NRDC Equity Partners Bonnie Brooks was employed as CEO of the retail chain and announced an all-round renovation of department stores. In addition, some department stores have been renamed to Lord & Taylor, the brand of the new owner in the high price segment that occurred previously in the U.S. only.

During the IPO in 2012 then a rebranding of the retail chain was announced to refer more to the historical roots of the company. In March 2013, the new name of Hudson's Bay was officially presented.
