Hugh Cecil, 1st Baron Quickswood

Hugh Richard Heathcote ( Gascoyne - ) Cecil, 1st Baron Quickwood, better known as Lord Hugh Cecil (* October 14, 1869; † 10 December 1956) was a British politician.

Life and work

Cecil was born in 1869 as son of Robert Gascoyne - Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, who was 1883-1902 three times British Prime Minister. His cousin, the son of his father's sister, the statesman and philosopher Arthur Balfour, the numerous 1883-1929 government offices, including that of the Prime Minister ( 1902-1905 ) and Minister of Foreign Affairs ( 1916-1919 ) was held.

Cecil attended Eton College and studied at University College, University of Oxford. After finishing his studies, he assisted his father from 1891 to 1892 as an assistant private secretary in his office as Secretary of State.

In 1895 he was elected as a Conservative candidate for the constituency of Greenwich from the House of Commons. He was re-elected several times until 1906 for this constituency. In 1910 he became MP for the Conservative Party for the constituency of Oxford University, which he, represented for the next 27 years, until 1937 in the Parliament.

In the first decade of the 20th century Cecil did as name -founding leader of the " Hughligans " (a pun on Cecil's name Hugh and the word hooligan ), a group of rebellious young conservative MP who attracted attention because of their vigorous criticism of the leaders of their party. The Hughligans listed next to Cecil, among others Frederick Edwin Smith, Arthur Stanley, Ian Malcolm and - until 1904 - Winston Churchill, Cecil acted as best man at his wedding in 1908.

In World War Cecil served temporarily as a Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps.

1937 Cecil left the House to become Provost of Eton College. 1941 Cecil was that so far only the salutation Lord led as a posthumous son of his father, as Baron Quickwood, of Clothall raised in the County of Hertford, in the hereditary nobility. With the death of Cecil's 1956 - who had remained childless - went out this title.
