Hugh III of Maine

Hugo III. of Maine (French: Hugues, † 1014-1016 ) was a Count of Maine since 992. He was the son and successor of Count Hugh II of the Second House Maine.

Like his father, Hugo did not recognize the first Capetian king Hugh Capet and allied with Count Odo I of Blois. After this but 996 died and King Robert II the Pious took up his sons to his court, Hugo was also forced to recognize the new balance of power. He also had the Count Fulk III. homage of Anjou, who was a faithful follower of the king, and thus these recognize as lord of Maine. Nevertheless, Hugo continued to seek the proximity to the house of Blois and supported in the following years, Count Odo II against the Duke of Normandy, Richard II, together with the Count Waleran III. of Meulan 1013 they attacked the Normandy and besieged the castle of Tillières -sur -Avre. There, however, they were surprised by Duke Richard and put to flight. Hugo escaped captivity by hiding in a sheepfold and then was disguised as a shepherd penetrate to Le Mans.

Hugo had two sons. The eponymous Older died before his father, the second Herbert I. succeeded him as Count.
