Hugh Owen Thomas

Hugh Owen Thomas (* 1834 in Bode Dern, Anglesey, † 1891 in Liverpool) was a British surgeon and orthopedic surgeon.

Life

Thomas came from a family of therapeutic agents that musculoskeletal disorders treated ( Bonesetter ). He studied in Edinburgh and London, but left soon after graduating in 1857 in Liverpool, where he mainly worked as a general practitioner in poor neighborhoods. In 1891, he died of pneumonia.

Thomas helped shape in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which is why it is referred to as the father of orthopedics in the UK. Thomas was an energetic supporter of bed rest in tuberculosis and broken bones. He developed the Thomas splint, which was used for immobilization in hip injuries and diseases (and later was able to reduce greatly in the First World War, the mortality from fractures of the femur ). The Thomas - collar allowed patients with tuberculosis infection of the cervical spine limited mobility. Named after him Thomas - handle allows for the detection of a flexion contracture of the hip joint. Together with the pathologist John Hughes Bennett he postulated further concepts for the treatment of tuberculosis by the abundant supply of fresh air.
