Hugo Batalla

Hugo Batalla Parentini (* July 11, 1926; † 3 October 1998) was a Uruguayan politician and Vice- President of his country from 1 March 1995 until his death on October 3, 1998, Julio María Sanguinetti.

Batalla started his political career in the Partido Colorado and was from 1962 to 1971 a member of parliament of the Department of Montevideo. In 1971 he resigned from the Partido Colorado to start with Zelmar Michelini the Frente Amplio. By 1973, when the military took power, he continued to serve as a deputy. After the end of the military dictatorship in 1985 he was senator for the Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo (the party later joined the Frente Amplio in ) and remained so until 1995. 1989 nominated the Nuevo Espacio the Lista 99 associated Batalla as a presidential candidate. However, in the subsequent election he was only around nine percent of the vote. From 1993 he was also Vice President of the Senate. For the presidential elections in November 1994, he came back into the Partido Colorado and was named after its election victory vice president. He died on October 3, 1998 from lung cancer. His successor in the office of the Vice President was Hugo Fernández Faingold.

Politics aside Batalla was the founder of the newspaper Hechos and political magazine Zeta. He was also the 1991-1993 President of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol and 1992-1993 Vice President of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol.

1953 married Hugo Batalle Hilda Flores and had a daughter named Laura.
