Hugo Garay

Hugo Hernan Garay ( born November 27, 1980 in Tigre, Argentina ) is a professional boxer from Argentina and former WBA world champion in the light heavyweight division.

Amateur career

In 1998 Hugo Garay took in the discharged in Buenos Aires Junior World Cup second place in the light heavyweight division, in the final he lost there against Cuban Yohanson Martínez on points. At the Pan American Games in 1999 in Winnipeg ( Canada ), he took a third place. Garay took in 2000 for Argentina in the Olympic Games in Sydney in part, left there, however, already in the first round of the tournament by an abort defeats against the Kazakhs Olschas Orasalijew from.

Professional career

His professional career began Hugo Garay in July 2001. November 6, 2003, he defeated the Romanians Alejandro Lakatos in an eliminator for the WBO Association by technical knockout in the twelfth round and qualified for a World Championship bout against WBO titlist Zsolt Erdei. The battle against the Hungarians took place on 8 May 2004 in Dortmund and was won by Erdei only scarce and controversial on points. He suffered his third defeat due to disqualification for hitting after broadcast against his compatriot Franco Raúl Sánchez in October 2007. Nevertheless Garay in 2008 was appointed the challenger for the WBA heavyweight champion Danny Green. Green finished but a little later his career, so Garay boxed on 3 July 2008 against the European champions at light heavyweight, Yuri Baraschian from Ukraine, in Buenos Aires for the vacant WBA title and won the title over twelve rounds on points. In his first title defense he defeated at the Stadthalle Rostock Brähmer on points. Since late 2008 he is at Universum Box-Promotion under contract. Quite surprisingly, however, Garay lost already in his second title defense on June 20, 2009 in Santa Fe ( Argentina) the title due to a point defeat to the Spaniard Gabriel Campillo.

On July 16, 2011, he boxed against Marco Huck to his WBO world title. After a very fast-paced, action-packed battle in which he brought Huck repeatedly in distress, he eventually lost after a stroke attack Huck KOs in the 10th round.
