Hugo Haas

Hugo Haas ( born February 18, 1901 in Brno, † December 1, 1968 in Vienna) was a Czech actor, director, screenwriter and producer.

Life

Hugo Haas, was born in 1901 in Brno, in a Jewish family, the son of the shoemaker Zigmund Haas and his coming from Odessa Olga, nee Epstein, the composer Pavel Haas was his brother. After his school days, during which he also received singing lessons, he played at the National Theater in his hometown. Later, he also played on stage in Ostrava and Olomouc. From 1925, Haas was an actor at the National Theatre in Prague and also appeared in three silent films.

In the 1930s, Haas established itself as an actor in popular comedies like Muži v offsidu (1931 ), Dobrý Voják Švejk (1931 ), Život je pes (1933 ) or AT žije nebožtík (1935 ). Furthermore, working as an actor made ​​his debut in 1936 with the comedy Haas Velbloud uchem jehly as a director.

A year later, Haas directed the anti-fascist film Bila nemoc. In it, he himself played the lead role of Dr. Galén. In 1939, Haas was released from the Prague National Theatre because of his Jewish origin and emigrated via France, Spain and Portugal to the United States. His father and his brother Pavel were murdered by the Nazis. From 1944 he exhibited in Hollywood supporting roles characters of different nations dar.

In 1951, Haas worked in Hollywood as a director, but only little attention directed B-movies. His best work is probably the noir drama Lizzie (1957 ) with Eleanor Parker in the lead role. His last film in the U.S. was the autobiographical tinged drama Paradise Alley (1962). In the early 1960s returned Haas returned to Europe, he visited his old home, however, only once: in 1963 he attended the occasion of the 80 anniversary of the founding the Czechoslovak National Theatre.

His last role was played by Haas in 1968 in the British crime thriller The Strange Affair. Haas died on December 1, 1968 in Vienna, he is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Brno. In 2000, Haas was appointed posthumously honorary citizen of the city of Brno.
